Mathematics searches for universal truths, and is, in a sense, a universe of itself. A ripe area for mathematical research is the structure of self-healing processes. Self-healing objects are capable of repairing damage to their structure. They range from simple (e.g. water) to complex (e.g. a salamander's tail). Perhaps the process of mathematical discovery is itself self-healing, as it responds to the confusion caused by paradoxes and changes in our fundamental beliefs.
