Science

Crystals sometimes grow in surprisingly complex ways -- for example, synthetic bismuth crystals grow as square-angled spiral staircases. With the ability to design macromolecules, it is now possible to create crystals whose growth path is programmed by the designer, and can even "intelligently" respond to obstacles it encounters.
