| Future medical therapies could involve smart drugs, even molecular robots. Researchers hope to program certain molecules to 'crawl' around the outside of targeted cells after recognizing diagnostic cell-surface markers that identify it as malign. As the molecule interacts with the cell membrane, it destroys it, effectively cutting open the cell and leading to cell death -- which is good if the cell being eliminated is cancerous. |
