Artist's Biography
Growing up in Northern California, Ann Erpino was inspired by the natural beauty of that region. Her early paintings were of pristine fantasy landscapes without reference to human culture.
Earning a bachelor's degree in Fine Art at U.C. Berkeley, Ann recognized painting’s importance as a means of communication, and began to incorporate cultural elements into her work, the better to express her reflections on civilization. She continues to explore that interplay between nature and culture, between flora and mineral, between humans. Extensive travel to archaeological sites and natural landscapes provide reference material for her art, as do dreaming, reading, and pathologizing about the status quo.
Ann studied painting with Anne Pierce and Salvatore Casa at the Chico Art Center, where she taught art classes for five years, including a childrens' drawing class in Spanish. She also taught at the Boys' and Girls' Club, and has curated exhibitions, organized art workshops in Chico community centers and clubs, and hosted life drawing workshops in her home. She has worked as a scenographic artist, portraitist, docent, and as a muralist on an international artistic collaboration before becoming a full-time painter in 2001.
Ann's Painting Awards include the Los Angeles 2007 Open Call Award and the Peoples' Choice Award at A Taste of Chico, Juried International Exhibition. Currently, she is finishing a series of 79 commissioned paintings depicting nanotechnological research projects of the Erik Winfree Laboratory at Pasadena's CalTech. Ann is also beginning a new series of paintings, commissioned by Caltech's Christof Koch, depicting consciousness.
