The Duality of Human Nature
As far as we know, only human beings posess consciousness as we know it. While some other animals have complex experiences and feelings, with our unique capacity for language and ability to project our thoughts into the past and future, with our extreme self-awareness, our knowledge of death, and choices of how to behave, and what to read, we humans enjoy a level of consiousness, a cognitive substance as it were, unshared by any other thing that we know. |
