Self-assembly is a ubiquitous process at the molecular scale (crystals, viruses, cytoskeletons) and macroscopic scale (dust bunnies, sand dunes, stars). Tree forms are also ubiquitous in nature and culture, and are self-organizing at many scales (rivers, carbohydrates, traffic patterns).  These universal forms can be seen seemingly everywhere.

A.G. Cairns Smith hypothesizes that clay crystals begat life. The crystalline laticework, as it grew and broke apart, provided scaffolding for new crystal growths. As these crystals incorporated more organic molecules into their structure, toward reproductive advantage, the organic molecules eventually became sophisticated enough to, co-opt their host’s matrix and float away, perhaps on the next tide, as autonomous life.
Life may have begun as clay crystals that replicated by spontaneous mineralogical processes, eventually stimulating the production of organic molecules that form the basis for modern organisms.
Some scientists believe that free-range, pre-life organic molecules spontaneously joined together to make the first organisms. Joining and scission can be seen in the laboratory when scientists create self-assembling nanotubes known as `living polymers.'

AN INEVITABLE MIRACLE

Early life forms would likely be almost unrecognizable to us now. Throughout evolutionary history, an astounding variety of alternatives were chanced upon. For example, in the Cambrian explosion over 500 million years ago, animals with very strange (to us now) body plans and weird appendages evolved. Each of the animal kingdoms that we know today --  plants, animals, fungi, viruses and etc. -- began with a very unique distant ancestor.

Self Assembly, Self Healing, Life's Mineral Origins, and Evolution

Theories of life's origins and development can be studied and, to some extent, duplicated through DNA programming. Other ideas about the origin of life, and of the universe, are likely to remain theories, ideas, and myths, without any possibility of observation.

In a story by Stanislaw Lem, Mymosh accidentally came into being when a jettisoned object from a passing spaceship rattled a post-nuclear garbage dump, causing parts to tumble and collide, forming a thinking being.
