The Science Series

      These paintings by Ann Erpino were collaboratively conceived with Caltech's Dr. Erik Winfree. This growing series was commissioned by Erik to give as thank-you-gifts, each to a specific individual (79 to date) who has enriched Erik's scientific life at Caltech over the past 7 years.

      The Erik Winfree Laboratory specializes in DNA self assembly, nanotechnological research, computer science, and computation and neural systems, Each painting is a synthesis of its recipient's research, scientific theories, hobbies, personality traits, or some other aspect of their individuality. Erik tells Ann about each person who will receive a painting, then together they discuss ideas and sketches, and finally Ann paints one specific image for each person.

      Descriptions accompanying each painting were written by Erik and Ann, though each image has a metaphorical or direct meaning apart from the legend that appears with it.
