Dear Friends,

*****Art and Science are of course intimately related, but who really understands how? This summer I embarked on a project with my friend, the surrealist painter Ann Erpino, to explore this ground.

Treadmilling DNA
Cytoskeletal Motor
Microfluidic Devices
Digital Healer
Molecular Exchange
Dragonflies
***** I told her about the people (er, that's you) and the projects (er, that's your projects) that have enriched my scientific life at Caltech. Then we dreamed up ideas, visions, scenes... folded them, burned them, mixed them, bounced them off each other, fleshed them out... and then Ann got to work.

Microliter-Scale Biochemistry
Droplet
Caregivers
Floating Still Life
Bauhaus Minimalism
Grün
*****Unlike most of her other work, these are very small paintings -- "short stories" she likes to call them, maybe even "poems" -- otherwise, how could she finish 34 of them in a few months?

Breakthroughs
Hatchling
Opposing Forces
Heat Capacity
Grappling with Chaos
Hurdler
*****It all came out quite nicely. Each very different. Some are deeply connected to the science, some aren't. But each, I think, is lovely. The paintings are yours -- inspired by you, and for you to take home and put on your wall. One small painting for each of you. It's sort of a "thank you" for helping me through my past 6 years here at Caltech and/or for being a part of the lab.

Scientific Progress
If you Dare
Knowing Yourself
Inner Light
Landscape Seascape
Intermingling
*****Ann will exhibit this series for the first time next weekend at the Brewery Art Walk (http://www.breweryartwalk.com/). I will be dropping by around 1pm on Saturday Oct 7; it would be great if you can come by then too! Or some other time. Ann is looking forward to meeting you, if you haven't met her already.

Art and Science
I Was So Involved
Agglomerative Science
Joining/Scission
Uncertainty Principle
Maple Leaf
*****After the Art Walk, Ann will be showing the series at a few galleries. She expects that the paintings will finally be ready for you to take home in the spring, probably April.

Molecular Robotics
Migratory Procession
Molecular Robotics
959
Molecular Programming
Process of Elimination
*****In a separate email, I will send you the title of your painting, so you'll know which one is yours! (For those of you in distant parts of the country, we'll get it to you somehow. And check Ann's website... eventually, all these paintings will be there. http://www.annerpino.com.)

Interdisciplinary Research
Rainbow Fiber
Pattern Formation
Reaction Diffusion
Patterns of Settlement
Rearrangements
See you at the Brewery next Saturday!
