A.G. Cairns Smith hypothesized that clay crystals begat life. As self-assembling crystal molecules incorporated more organic molecules into their structure, toward their own reproductive advantage, eventually the organic molecules became sophisticated enough to develop their own matrices, and float away from their earthen host.
